Curb extensions at Milpas and Canon Perdido

Curb extensions at Milpas and Canon Perdido

Curb Extensions – Currently we are campaigning for curb extensions that were proposed as part of a mixed-use development project at the corner of Milpas and De La Guerra Streets, which is a highly trafficked corridor for students from both SBHS and SBJHS.  Curb extensions are a proven improvement for walkers.  The project (which was recently appealed specifically because of the curb extensions, will be heard by the City Council on Tuesday, 3/23 at 2:00 pm (Council Chambers at City Hall).  If you cannot attend the meeting, please consider emailing a letter in support.  Please see the Santa Barbara Walks home page for more information on curb extensions.

Walking Paths – We have also been part of advocating for a 1/2 mile decomposed granite pathway along the west side of San Ysidro Road.  Through a process initiated by concerned walkers and parents, COAST was instrumental in helping identify a potential solution and seek out funding for this project (which has been funded by a competitive Federal Safe Routes to School  grant).  Though we continually hear from neighbors and parents at Montecito Union about how unsafe the route currently is, there are a few vocal opponents of the project that have the ear of the local paper.  We need you to continue voicing your concern, even if you have already.  Please contact Caitlin if you would like to be added to our contact list.

  • Contact Legislators: Comprehensive Complete Streets Policies have been introduced in both the House and the Senate. Complete Streets policies can increase pedestrian safety, reduce traffic congestion, induce healthier lifestyles and improve air quality. Please contact our State Senators and our local Represenative to encourage them to support this important legislation
