Improving Cliff Drive on the Mesa

Another exciting project involves Cliff Drive on the Mesa, also known as Highway 225.  Currently Cliff Drive is a State Highway managed by Caltrans but the City of Santa Barbara is preparing to takeover Cliff Drive.  So what does this mean for pedestrians?  With the takeover by the City it will be possible to consider making changes that accommodate all users of the transportation system, instead of just cars like we experience with the current design.

We have been working with neighborhoods and community groups to help envision what the possibilities might look like.  With Cliff Drive lacking any type of marked crosswalk for just over 1.2 miles, there is plenty of room for improvement to make the area more pedestrian friendly.  We support the work of a group called the Mesa Architects Group, a self-formed group of resident architects who have been working with neighbors to create a plan for making the Mesa more sustainable, which includes making Cliff Drive safer for all users.
