Reconfiguring the intersection of State and De La Vina Streets
We are also helping to coordinate support for the proposed improvements at State and De La Vina Streets. This intersection currently does not accommodate pedestrians (nor bicyclists) safely. The existing configuration allows cars a free right turn lane which encourages speeding from State Street onto De La Vina Street, making it unsafe for pedestrians to navigate this intersection as well as crossing further down at Samarkand. The proposed improvements, which are long overdue, would eliminate the free right turn lane for vehicles, thus improving visibility, speed and movements in the area. This project would provide improvements that would mutually benefit pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
UPDATE:
On February 10th, during a 4 hour session the Santa Barbara City Council heard from the public regarding proposed changes to the intersection of State and De La Vina. There were 28 people that spoke in favor of the project and 20 that opposed it. Council delayed a final decision by sending the project back to staff for more options. As came up at the meeting, Santa Barbara Walks also supports the idea of a bikepath right lane bypass and a refuge island across De La Vina at Samarkand.
Thank you to all who voiced their concerns and are helping make these changes a reality!
But it’s not over yet and there’s more work to be done! Please contact Santa Barbara Walks Director Courtney to be notified of future actions and meetings.
