Montecito Safe Routes News

Welcome!

COAST is very excited about this, our newest, project. Thanks to a grant from the Green Park Foundation, COAST is working with Montecito residents, the supervisor’s office and county public works officials to create a footpath along San Ysidro Road that would enhance the beauty of the street and give people young and old the chance to enjoy it in safety.

Update:

We are making great strides towards the realization of a walking path on San Ysidro Road.  Many residents have shown their enthusiasm for the project by writing letters of support to Public Works and Supervisor Carbajal.  Additionally, Public Works as almost completed the preliminary study of the feasibility and requirements for the path.

The support of a walking path has prompted pedestrian safety awareness and traffic reduction measures elsewhere.  The Montecito Union School (MUS) has approved a trial school bus system for the upcoming school year and a carpool plan is in the works.  With all these wonderful ideas, parents will have several alternatives to driving when getting their children to school this fall.

Updates will continue to be posted and COAST’s Montecito Safe Routes program will have a table at MUS’s Back to School Day to answer questions and provide parents and educators with materials and information.

You Plan Santa Barbara

Program’s Site
The City of Santa Barbara has began the process to update its General Plan
with an extensive public outreach to gauge the pulse of the community. This
process (“Plan Santa Barbara”) is expected to generate major policy changes.
Four public workshops were held at the beginning of the summer with a second round planned for the fall.

In order for a community to make shared decisions, it must be in possession
of shared FACTS and not proceed from misunderstandings and prejudice. That
is the message that COAST forwarded to City representatives at the May 17
presentation. How do you elevate the discussion from the usual rhetoric
(i.e., “Preserve the quality of life”, “Live within our resources”) to more
concrete topics?

Policy questions should be focused and informed instead of asking about
people’s “feelings”. COAST requests that the City provide updated
statistical information about population and development patterns as
background for these discussions. The community needs factual information
to evaluate how our population and region are evolving.
